PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

What is Preventive Dentistry Exactly?

Simply, preventive dental care is dentistry that aims to maintain good oral health and prevent tooth decay and other complications. This includes regular cleanings and checkups, periodontal care, fluoride treatments, and everything in between.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that promotes strong teeth and helps to prevent the formation of cavities. It is present in many toothpastes and tap water, but at much lower levels than is available from your dentist, and has been proven to be effective at minimizing the risk of dental caries, or cavities. At Sky Dental, we apply a layer of concentrated fluoride gel/paste to help remineralize you or your child’s teeth to keep them strong and resilient against tooth decay. If you’ve already experienced some level of tooth decay, fluoride cannot reverse the effects, but it can stop the bacteria from penetrating deeper into the tooth.

The number of fluoride treatments a patient needs in a year depends on their age and the state of their oral health. Give Us a Visit Today to see if you or your child could benefit from a fluoride treatment!

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are made of a thin resin coating that is generally applied to the back teeth as a way for us to protect them from the buildup of plaque and bacteria that cause tooth decay. The sealant smooths out the grooved and pitted surface of your molars, minimizing the uneven surfaces and depressions that plaque thrives in. The procedure to apply dental sealants is easy and pain-free, and, when used in combination with fluoride treatments, can protect you or your child’s teeth for years to come.

Oral Cancer Screenings

As part of every comprehensive exam, Dr. Mike Truong will perform an oral cancer screening, examining your mouth and gums for any discolored spots, lumps, or other abnormalities for your continued health and peace of mind.

Deep Cleaning With Scaling & Root Planing

One of the most effective ways of fighting periodontal disease is through deep cleanings that go beyond the usual dental cleaning by incorporating scaling and root planing.

Scaling involves removing the buildup of plaque and tartar both on the surface of your teeth and below your gums with specialized tools. The bacteria that causes plaque releases an acid that breaks down enamel and bone, and can result in the loss of your teeth entirely, making its removal the top priority so we can minimize the damage it causes. Root planing smooths the surface of the tooth’s roots, making it harder for bacteria to catch hold of the tooth. It also promotes healing and the reattachment of your gums to the roots, minimizing the pocket that bacteria can hide in.

Periodontal Care

Periodontal, or gum, disease is an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth and hold them in place, and, if left untreated, can lead to the degeneration of the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis occurs as a result of plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline, and symptoms include swollen, puffy gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, a receding gum line, and even a change in how your bite fits together. Although periodontal disease is common, it is treatable and largely preventable by developing good oral hygiene habits.
