Dental Crowns & Bridges In Edmonton

DENTAL CROWNS & BRIDGES

What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns act like small “caps” or helmets that slip over the visible tooth, sealing it inside. Their strength safeguards brittle or compromised tooth structures, preventing additional deterioration. We recommend crowns for teeth with severe fractures, decay, or after a root canal to improve the strength and protection of the tooth overall.

Your teeth are the most durable structures in your entire body. However, tooth enamel can occasionally succumb to accidental injuries, decay, disease, and even extensive wear.

When that happens, our Edmonton dentists provide customized treatments like crowns and bridges to restore your smile back to its optimal health.

Advantages of Dental Bridges

Fixed dental bridges provide straightforward treatment for missing teeth. The bridge itself resembles a set of crowns fused side by side, with either end anchored over healthy teeth or a pair of dental implants. We’ll also show you how to carefully clean around (and under) the restoration, helping to extend its length of success.

Material Options for Crowns and Bridges

Depending on which teeth in your mouth are being treated, we utilize a choice of zirconia, gold, and porcelain fused to metal restorations. These crowns and bridge options prioritize strength and aesthetics for specific areas of your bite. Each holds its own benefits, so we’ll want to discuss the advantages of each during your examination.

What Steps Are Involved In Getting A Dental Crown Or Bridge?

Step 1:
Your tooth is prepped according to the material you have chosen with your Edmonton dentist. These preparations are very specific to maximize strength and aesthetics of the crown. If your tooth is broken down, it may need to be built up again during the prep appointment.

Step 2:
Once the tooth is prepped, a very accurate impression is taken of the tooth. This allows the lab to make the crown or bridge customized to you. The impression can be digital or with impression paste.

Step 3:
The impression is sent to our partner dental lab for fabrication. It takes approximately 1 week to make. In the meantime, your dentist will make a temporary crown to protect the prepped tooth underneath.

Step 4:
When your custom crown is back from the lab, we cement it on after fitting it for fit and bite. This appointment typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Protecting Your Investment

Although crowns and bridges don’t decay like tooth enamel, their seal can be compromised by dental plaque collecting around the edges of the restoration. Daily brushing and flossing, as well as routine checkups, are essential for preserving the integrity of all dental work. We highly recommend investing in a bruxism nightguard to reduce the chances of any damage caused by clenching and grinding.
